Boxing for kids in India: starter kit, safety and when to begin

Boxing-style training is growing among Indian children, thanks to school sports programmes, fitness classes and the popularity of Indian boxers. If your child wants to try it, the right gear and the right coach matter far more than the gloves' brand name. This guide covers what a starter kit includes, how to keep training safe and one youth kit available at InstaSport. It is general information, not medical advice.

Is boxing training suitable for children?

Many clubs offer non-contact boxing fitness for children, with pad work, shadow boxing, footwork and bag drills, and delay sparring until the child is older and has learnt the basics. Whether your child should spar is a question for a qualified coach and, where needed, a doctor. For most beginners, non-contact drills build coordination, fitness and discipline without heavy hits to the head.

What does a kids' boxing starter kit include?

  • Boxing gloves: Sized for small hands, with padded wrists. Youth gloves should not be adult gloves with a loose fit.
  • Hand wraps: These support the wrist and protect the knuckles. Read our hand wraps guide.
  • Head guard and mouth guard: Needed whenever there is contact, and a coach will say when.
  • Skipping rope: Footwork and stamina start with a rope.
  • Water bottle and towel: Keep hydration simple.

The USI Youth Boxing Kit Set

The Usi Youth Boxing Kit Set is listed at ₹2,249 (MRP ₹2,499) and is a youth set, which makes it suitable for a child who is just starting out. Check the product page for exactly what is in the set, since kit contents can vary, and compare the size range with your child's age and hand size before buying.

How to choose the right glove size for a child

Gloves are sold by ounce weight. Children's gloves are usually lighter than adult gloves, and heavier gloves are for bag work and sparring with proper supervision. A glove that is too big will slide, and one that is too small can pinch the hand. Have your child make a fist, put the glove on and tighten the strap so the hand sits firmly with room to flex the fingers.

Safety basics for young boxers

  1. Always train under a qualified coach, not alone from videos.
  2. Start with fitness, footwork and bag or pad work before any contact.
  3. Always warm up and stretch.
  4. Replace worn gloves; padding that is flat or cracked does not protect.
  5. Stop training and see a doctor after any hit to the head that causes dizziness, headache or confusion.

Home practice on a budget

Shadow boxing, skipping and a hanging bag or focus pads are enough for home sessions between coached classes. For adult beginners and home setups, see our boxing starter kit guide.

Frequently asked questions

At what age can a child start boxing training?

There is no single age. Many clubs run non-contact fitness classes for children, and sparring is left until later. Ask a qualified coach and, if you have concerns, your child's doctor.

Do kids need a head guard for boxing training?

Head guards and mouth guards are used when there is contact. A coach will tell you when your child needs them; non-contact drills do not require them.

How do I check if boxing gloves fit a child?

The hand should sit firmly in the glove with the strap tight and enough room to flex the fingers. If the glove slides or pinches, try another size.
