A cadence sensor costs about ₹3,000 and tells you one number. Here is when that number is worth having, what to aim for, and which type to buy in India.

A cycling cadence sensor measures one thing — how many times per minute you turn the pedals, in RPM. It is a small, cheap device that straps to the crank arm or bolts near the bottom bracket, and it sends that number to your bike computer, watch or phone app over Bluetooth or ANT+.

The question most Indian riders ask is whether it is worth ₹2,500–₹3,300 when a bike computer already shows speed and distance. Speed tells you what happened; cadence tells you how you produced it. Two riders doing 25 kmph on the same road, one grinding at 60 RPM and one spinning at 90 RPM, are having completely different days.

Do you actually need a cadence sensor?

It genuinely helps four groups of riders:

  • Beginners learning gear selection. Most new cyclists in India ride in too big a gear at too low a cadence, which loads the knees. Watching the number is the fastest way to break that habit.
  • Anyone doing structured training. Interval sessions and endurance plans are usually written with a cadence target, not just a power or speed target.
  • Indoor trainer riders. On a trainer, speed is meaningless — cadence and power are the only real feedback you have.
  • Riders with knee pain. Low-cadence grinding puts more force through the knee per revolution. Spinning faster in an easier gear spreads the same work over more, lighter pedal strokes.

It is less useful if you ride purely for commuting or weekend leisure on flat roads and have no interest in training structure. There is no shame in that; you can skip the sensor entirely.

What cadence should you aim for?

The often-quoted 90 RPM comes from professional racing and is not a target for everyone. A realistic range for most riders:

The useful goal is not hitting a magic number; it is noticing when you have drifted well below your own normal range, which almost always means you should have changed gear a minute ago.

Magnet or magnetless: which type to buy

There are two designs on the market in India.

Compatibility: check this before you buy

Three quick checks:

  • Protocol. ANT+ works with most dedicated bike computers; Bluetooth works with phones and watches. Dual-protocol sensors avoid the question entirely and are worth the small premium.
  • Head unit. Some brands pair most smoothly with their own ecosystem. If you already own a particular bike computer, a same-brand sensor is the least fiddly path.
  • Crank clearance. Crank-arm pods sit on the inside face of the crank. On some frames with tight chainstay clearance, check that the pod does not touch the frame at the bottom of the pedal stroke.

Installation and maintenance in Indian conditions

Installation takes about five minutes: strap the pod to the crank arm, wake it by spinning the cranks, pair it in your app. Two India-specific notes:

  • Monsoon and dust. Look for an IPX7 rating. Sensors mounted low on the frame take a lot of road spray.
  • Battery. Most use a CR2032 coin cell lasting roughly a year. Keep a spare; the failure mode is a cadence reading that silently drops to zero mid-ride.

Cadence, speed or power: what to buy first

If you are building up a data setup on a budget, the sensible order for most Indian riders is a bike computer first, then a combined speed-and-cadence sensor at around ₹2,500–₹3,300, then heart rate, and only then power. A power meter costs several times more and answers a question most riders are not asking yet.

Do I need a cadence sensor if my bike computer already has GPS?

GPS gives you speed and distance but cannot see your pedalling. If you only ride casually, GPS alone is fine. If you are following a training plan, riding indoors, or trying to fix a habit of grinding in too big a gear, a cadence sensor adds the one number GPS cannot infer.

What is a good cadence for a beginner cyclist?

Most beginners naturally settle around 60–70 RPM, which is lower than ideal. Aiming for 80–90 RPM on flat roads in an easier gear usually feels strange for the first few rides and then becomes comfortable. Seated climbing will drop lower, and that is normal.

Are magnetless cadence sensors better than magnet ones?
