Your First 50 km Ride: An 8-Week Cyclothon Season Plan for India (2026-27)

Cyclothon season starts in October. An eight-week build to your first 50 km, plus the short list of kit that makes the difference at that distance.

Your first 50 km ride: an 8-week cyclothon season plan for India

Cyclothon season in India runs from roughly October through February — the window when the weather cooperates and event calendars fill up across Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi NCR and just about every tier-two city with a cycling club. The 50 km distance is where most events put their entry-level category, and it is a genuinely achievable target for someone currently riding 10–15 km at a time.

Eight weeks is enough. Here is the plan, and the small list of gear that actually matters.

How long does it take to train for a 50 km bike ride?

Standard beginner programmes run 8 to 12 weeks, and 8 is workable if you can already ride 15 km comfortably. The structure is simple: three rides a week, two of them short and easy, one longer ride that grows steadily. Nothing needs to be hard. Endurance at this distance comes from time in the saddle, not from intervals.

WeekShort ride 1Short ride 2Long ride (weekend)

Every ride should be at conversational pace — if you cannot hold a sentence, you are going too hard. The point of the long ride is duration, not speed.

The gear that actually matters

Padded shorts, before anything else

If you buy one thing for this block, buy padded shorts. Not a lighter wheelset, not a computer. At 40 km your contact points decide whether the ride is enjoyable or a countdown. The Gambitt Comfort 2 Padded Cycling Shorts at ₹1,999 do the job. Wear them without underwear — that is what the chamois is for, and it is the mistake almost every first-timer makes.

A helmet you will actually wear

Non-negotiable on Indian roads, and mandatory at almost every organised cyclothon. The Cosco Extreme Helmet Sr. at ₹679 is an inexpensive entry point; fit matters more than price, so check that it sits level and does not rock when you shake your head.

Hydration you can reach without stopping

A bottle in a jersey pocket is a bottle you will not drink from. Fit a CMB Bottle Cage at ₹570 to the frame. On a 50 km ride in Indian conditions plan on 500–750 ml per hour, more if you are riding after 9 am.

A floor pump — the most underrated purchase in cycling

Correct tyre pressure is free speed and free comfort, and a hand pump cannot get you there. The Giyo GM-71 Micro Floor Pump with Gauge at ₹1,649 or the Firefox Floor Pump - Alloy with Gauge at ₹2,199 let you check pressure before every ride, which is the habit that prevents most pinch flats.

The bike itself

You do not need a new bike for 50 km. If yours is serviceable and fits, ride it. If you are buying in, a fitness hybrid such as the Cannondale Quick 5.1 8S at ₹41,739 covers this distance comfortably and remains useful for commuting afterwards.

What to do in the last week before the event

  • Do not ride hard. The fitness is already banked. The last week is for arriving fresh.
  • Service the bike 10 days out, not the night before. You want time to fix whatever the service uncovers.
  • Ride your event kit on at least two training rides. Event day is not the time to discover a seam.
  • Eat on the bike from week 5. Practise taking a banana or a bar at 20 km so your stomach is used to it.
  • Arrive early. Start pens in Indian cyclothons fill fast and warming up in a queue is not warming up.

On the day

Start slower than feels right. The first 10 km of a mass-start event always goes too fast because everyone is fresh and there is a crowd. Ride your own pace, drink every 20 minutes whether or not you feel thirsty, and take the second half faster than the first. Riders who negative-split their first 50 km finish it grinning; riders who go out with the front group finish it walking their bike up the last flyover.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to train for a 50 km cycle ride?

Eight to twelve weeks is the normal range. Eight weeks works if you can already ride 15 km comfortably, using three rides a week — two short easy rides and one weekend long ride that grows by about 5 to 7 km each week, with a recovery week around week four.

Do I need a road bike for a 50 km cyclothon?

No. A fitness hybrid or a well-maintained MTB with the tyres pumped up will complete 50 km comfortably. Fit, tyre pressure and padded shorts affect your experience far more than frame type at this distance.

What should I eat and drink during a 50 km ride?

Plan on roughly 500–750 ml of fluid per hour in Indian conditions, more in heat or after 9 am, and take something solid such as a banana or an energy bar at around the 20 km mark. Practise eating on the bike during training rather than trying it for the first time on event day.
