The letters on a football boot — FG, SG, AG and TF — are not marketing noise. They tell you the stud type, and therefore the surface the boot is built for. Buy the wrong one and you will slip, wreck the outsole, or risk your ankles and knees. This guide explains each football boot stud type and which suits how and where you actually play in India.

Most of us play across a mix of surfaces, so the goal is to match your boots to where you spend most of your time.

FG (Firm Ground): natural grass

FG boots are the default for dry-to-slightly-wet natural grass. They use moulded conical or bladed studs that dig in for grip and release cleanly. If your matches are on real grass pitches, this is your starting point — for example, the Adidas Predator League Laceless FG (₹7,199).

SG (Soft Ground): wet, muddy pitches

SG boots use longer studs — often metal, or a mix of metal and moulded — to bite into soft, waterlogged or churned-up natural grass. They are a specialist choice for heavy monsoon pitches. On firm or artificial surfaces those long metal studs are unstable and unsafe, so keep SG for genuinely soft ground only.

AG (Artificial Grass) and TF (Turf): the surfaces most of us play on

AG boots are purpose-built for modern 3G/4G artificial grass, with more, shorter studs to spread load and avoid the joint stress FG studs cause on hard artificial pitches. TF (turf) boots swap studs for many small rubber lugs, ideal for older astro, five-a-side cages and hard, short artificial surfaces.

Fit and boot care

Studs decide grip, but fit decides comfort and control. Football boots should fit snugly with about a thumb's width of space at the toe — a loose boot slides and causes blisters, while a cramped one ruins your touch. Try boots on with the socks you actually play in, and shop in the evening when your feet are slightly larger. Synthetic uppers give very little, so buy them true to size; leather relaxes a touch with wear.

Make them last by cleaning off mud and grass after each game, loosening the laces and removing any insole to air out, and stuffing them with paper to hold shape as they dry — always away from direct heat, which cracks uppers and warps soles.
