Golf Club Care in India: Towels, Covers and a Simple Cleaning Routine
Dust, damp and hot car boots wear out clubs fast. A simple towel, clean and cover routine keeps your clubs performing, with picks from ₹490.
Golf club care in India: how to keep your clubs clean and protected
Indian courses are tough on equipment. Dust, red soil, humid monsoon air, hot car boots and sandy bunkers can all dull a set of clubs long before the shafts wear out. A little regular care keeps grooves clean for spin, protects finishes and makes your clubs last longer. This guide covers the basic golf club care routine for Indian players, what to carry on the course, and how to store clubs between rounds.
The on-course routine: wipe, wipe, wipe
Dirt in the grooves reduces spin, especially on wedges and short irons, so it pays to clean as you go. Carry a damp microfibre towel clipped to your bag and wipe the clubface after each shot from the rough, sand or wet turf. The GolfBasic Premium Microfiber Golf Towel at ₹490 and the Birdie 79 Retractable Microfiber Golf Towel at ₹890 are simple options. Keep one side damp and the other dry so you can wipe the club and your hands. Do the same for your golf ball before putting.
After the round: a five-minute clean
- Soak the heads in a bucket of lukewarm water with a few drops of mild dish soap for a few minutes. Avoid soaking the hosel area for long, and never let water run down into the shaft.
- Brush the grooves with a soft nylon brush or an old toothbrush. Avoid sharp metal tools that can damage the clubface.
- Rinse and dry thoroughly with a towel, especially around the hosel.
- Wipe the shafts with a damp cloth, then dry them.
- Clean the grips with warm soapy water and a cloth; rinse and let them air dry. Slippery grips are a sign it may be time to replace them, as explained in our post-monsoon regripping guide.
If your clubs are new or have special finishes, check the manufacturer's care notes before using soap.
Protect the heads with covers
Clubs knock against each other in a bag, which can chip paint and scratch sole plates. Headcovers prevent that. For drivers, fairway woods and hybrids, covers are standard. For irons and wedges, protective sets are available: the PGA Tour Iron Protector Covers (9pcs Set) (9 pieces) at ₹2,225 and the GolfBasic Wedge Face Covers (7 Pcs set) at ₹1,245. Our headcovers guide explains what each type protects, and the GolfBasic Scorpion Putter Cover at ₹1,490 protects a putter face.
Keep the bag dry
Moisture is a bigger enemy than dirt, particularly in coastal and monsoon cities. A rain cover such as the GolfBasic Deluxe Golf Bag Rain Cover at ₹790 keeps clubs, grips and your gloves dry on wet days. After a wet round, remove the clubs from the bag, wipe them dry and leave the bag open to air. See our wet-weather checklist for more.
Storage and transport tips
- Do not leave clubs in a hot car boot. Heat can weaken the epoxy that holds clubheads to shafts and soften grips.
- Store them upright or in a cool, dry place away from direct sun and damp walls.
- Use a travel bag for flights or long drives; a padded duffle such as the GolfBasic Premium Golf Travel Duffle Bag at ₹1,690 is useful for other gear. Also see flying with sports gear.
- Check regularly for loose heads, rattling noises or cracked grips, and take any problem to a club repairer.
When to replace or refurbish
Grips usually need replacing every year or so for regular golfers, or when they feel hard, shiny or slippery. Worn grooves on wedges reduce spin and may be a sign that a new wedge is due. For help choosing a replacement, read our guide to grip sizes and wedge setups.
