Driver loft is the angle of the clubface relative to the shaft, and it is the number most often chosen for the wrong reason. Plenty of golfers buy a 9° head because that is what the good players in the group play, then spend a season wondering why their drives climb weakly and fall out of the sky.

The physics is simple. Loft plus attack angle produces launch angle and spin. Get launch too low with too little spin and the ball drops early. Get it too high with too much spin and it balloons. The correct loft is the one that gets your particular clubhead speed into the right launch window.

A senior or slower-swinging player who moves from 9° to 10.5° often gains meaningful carry — not because the club is longer, but because the ball finally gets airborne on the right trajectory. If you are unsure of your speed, most driving ranges in Indian metros now have a launch monitor bay; one 20-minute session settles the question better than any chart.

Attack angle: the number nobody measures

Attack angle is whether the clubhead is moving up or down at impact. Tour players who hit up on the ball (a positive attack angle) can play less loft, because their upward strike adds launch for free. Most amateurs hit slightly down on the driver, which effectively removes loft at impact — which is precisely why so many are under-lofted. If you hit down on your driver, adding static loft is a genuine fix.

Adjustable hosels changed the question

Modern drivers with adjustable hosels let you shift loft by roughly ±1.5-2° and change the face angle and lie, which means the number stamped on the sole is a starting point, not a commitment. That flexibility is especially useful in India, where you may play a mix of soft, lush monsoon-season courses where carry is everything, and firm winter fairways where a lower flight and more roll pays.

Loft is not a standalone decision

Shaft flex

Loft and flex work together. A shaft that is too stiff for your speed will lower launch, which then makes low loft feel even worse. If you are considering more loft, check your flex at the same time.

Ball choice

Lower-compression balls launch higher and spin less off the driver for slower swings, which can substitute for some of the loft change. If you are between 10.5° and 12°, try the ball change first — it is a lot cheaper.

Course conditions in India

Firm winter fairways in the north reward a slightly lower, more penetrating flight with roll. Soft, wet monsoon-season turf gives you nothing after landing, so carry becomes everything and more loft pays. An adjustable driver lets you follow the seasons.

A simple decision path

  • Do you know your swing speed? If not, measure it before buying anything.
  • Under 85 mph — start at 12° and adjust down only if the flight balloons.
  • 85-100 mph — start at 10.5°. This covers the large majority of club golfers.
  • Above 105 mph with a positive attack angle — 9° is defensible; below that, it is vanity.
  • Slicing? Loft alone will not fix it — look at a draw-biased head and your face angle at impact.

Should I play a 9 or 10.5 degree driver?

For most club golfers, 10.5 degrees. A 9 degree head suits players swinging above roughly 105 mph, or those with a genuinely upward attack angle. Below that, less loft usually costs carry rather than adding distance.

Does more driver loft mean less distance?

Not for slower swing speeds. Below about 95 mph, extra loft usually adds carry and total distance because the ball finally reaches an efficient launch window. Only fast swingers lose distance to excess loft through added spin.

Can I change the loft on my existing driver?

If it has an adjustable hosel, yes — typically by around 1.5 to 2 degrees in either direction, which is enough to move between the common settings. Older fixed-hosel drivers cannot be adjusted.
