It is how the panels are joined and what the bladder is made of. The practical difference in India: seams are where water gets in. On a monsoon-soaked ground, a machine-stitched ball absorbs water, gains weight and starts stinging to head or volley. A thermo-bonded ball barely changes. That is why the same ball feels heavy in July and fine in December.

Hand-stitched sits in between, and for most Indian club and academy play it is the sweet spot — durable seams, good shape retention, and considerably cheaper than a top thermo-bonded match ball.

Latex vs butyl bladders: which should you buy?

The bladder is the balloon inside the ball, and it decides two things: how the ball feels off the foot, and how often you have to pump it.

  • Butyl bladders hold air far longer — typically weeks between top-ups. Slightly firmer, less responsive feel. This is what you want for a training ball, a school ball, or any ball that lives in a bag and gets used without ceremony.
  • Latex bladders give a softer, livelier touch and better rebound, which is why high-end match balls use them. The trade-off is air retention: a latex ball can lose noticeable pressure in two or three days and needs pumping before most sessions.

For the large majority of buyers in India, butyl is the correct answer. Latex is for players who will genuinely pump the ball before every match and care about the extra touch.

Cover material: PU vs PVC vs TPU

  • PVC: hardest and cheapest. Very durable on rough surfaces like concrete and gravel, but stiff and unforgiving in the cold. Fine for casual kickabouts, poor for technique work.
  • PU (polyurethane): softer, better touch, better water resistance. The standard for decent training and match balls.
  • TPU: a middle ground — more durable than PU, more responsive than PVC. Increasingly common on mid-range training balls.
