The Rules of Golf allow you a maximum of 14 clubs. Almost nobody starting out needs all 14, and plenty of golfers carrying a full bag would score better with ten. This guide covers what a 14-club setup actually looks like, what to leave out when you are beginning, and how package sets in India stack up against building a bag piece by piece.
What goes in a full 14-club bag?

The rule that governs all of it: consistent yardage gaps. You want roughly 10–15 yards between consecutive clubs. Two clubs that go the same distance is one wasted slot, and every wasted slot is a gap somewhere else in your bag.
Why beginners should not carry 14 clubs
A beginner cannot reliably tell the difference between a 4-iron and a 5-iron, because the shot-to-shot variation in strike is larger than the distance gap between them. Carrying both adds decisions without adding options. A 9- to 11-club setup covers everything:
- Driver
- 3-wood or 5-wood
- One or two hybrids (replacing the 3- and 4-irons entirely)
- 5, 7, 9 irons — or 6, 8, pitching wedge
- Sand wedge
- Putter
This is not a compromise. Long irons are the hardest clubs in golf to hit, and a hybrid launches higher with more forgiveness from the same lie. Most Indian courses, with their firm winter fairways and tight lies, punish a badly struck long iron more than anything else in the bag.
Should you buy a package set or build a bag?
For a first bag in India, a package set almost always wins on value. Buying a driver, fairway wood, iron set, wedge, putter and bag separately at comparable quality will cost noticeably more, and the set has already been designed with sensible loft gaps between clubs.

Where the wasted slots usually are
- Too many long clubs. Driver, 3-wood, 5-wood and a 3-hybrid is four clubs covering maybe 40 yards of range for a mid-handicapper. Cut one.
- A lob wedge you cannot use. A 60° wedge in the hands of an inconsistent striker produces more bladed shots than saved ones. Learn the sand wedge first.
- Duplicate gaps after switching iron sets. Modern game-improvement irons are stronger-lofted than older sets, which frequently leaves a 25-yard hole between the pitching wedge and the sand wedge. A gap wedge is the fix.
Steel or graphite shafts?
Graphite is lighter, generates more clubhead speed and dampens vibration — useful for slower swing speeds, seniors and anyone with wrist or elbow sensitivity. Steel is heavier, cheaper and gives more feedback and control, which suits stronger, faster swingers. Many Indian package sets sensibly mix the two: graphite in the woods, steel in the irons.
Work out your gaps before you buy anything else
Before adding a 14th club, spend a range session hitting five balls with each club you own and noting the average carry. Almost everyone finds one overlap and one hole. Filling the hole is worth more strokes than any new driver.
