How to Choose Bicycle Chain Lube and Cleaning Kits in India
Wet lube or dry? How to clean, lube and stop destroying your drivetrain — with kits from ₹150.
How to choose bicycle chain lube and cleaning kits in India
Bicycle chain lube is the cheapest performance upgrade you will ever buy, and the one most Indian riders get wrong. A dry, gritty chain wastes watts, chews through cassettes and sounds like a rusty gate. A chain drowned in the wrong lube collects road dust into a grinding paste that does the same damage faster. The choice is not really about brands — it is about matching lube type to the season you are riding in.
Wet lube vs dry lube: which should you use?
| Dry lube | Wet lube | |
|---|---|---|
| Best season | Summer, dry dusty roads | Monsoon, humid coastal riding |
| Dirt pickup | Low | High |
| Washes off in rain | Easily | Resists water |
| Reapply | Every 100–150km | Every 200–300km, or after wet rides |
For most Indian riders the practical answer is to own both. Run dry lube from October to May, when dust is the enemy. Switch to a wet or ceramic-wax lube through the monsoon, when water is. A wax-based option such as Squirt Chain Lube (₹150) is a good middle ground — it sheds dirt like a dry lube but survives damp roads better than a thin oil.
Why degreasing matters more than lubing
Lube applied over old grime does nothing except suspend the grit closer to your rollers. Every third or fourth application, strip the chain properly. A citrus or bio degreaser such as Krutials Degreaser (₹549) or Muc-Off Chain Cleaner 400ml (₹900) will lift the old lube without attacking seals in your bearings the way petrol or kerosene does. If you would rather buy the whole workflow in one box, the Muc-Off Bicycle Chain Care Kit (₹3,300) bundles cleaner, brush and a chain-scrubbing device.
How to clean and lube a bicycle chain, step by step
- 1. Backpedal the chain through a rag to knock off loose grit.
- 2. Apply degreaser, scrub the rollers and jockey wheels with a stiff brush, leave 2–3 minutes.
- 3. Rinse with a gentle flow of water. Never a pressure washer near bearings.
- 4. Dry the chain completely. Wet chains rust within hours in Indian humidity.
- 5. Drip one bead of lube onto each roller, one full chain rotation.
- 6. Wait 10–15 minutes for it to penetrate, then wipe the outside of the chain dry. The lube belongs inside the rollers, not on the plates.
That final wipe is the step everyone skips, and it is the difference between a clean drivetrain and a black stripe on your right calf.
How often should you lube your bike chain in India?
Roughly every 100–150km with dry lube, every 200–300km with wet lube, and always after a ride in the rain. If the chain squeaks, you are already late. If it drips, you have used too much.
Can I use motor oil or WD-40 on a bicycle chain?
No. Motor oil is far too thick and holds grit; standard WD-40 is a water-displacer and solvent, not a lubricant, and will leave the chain effectively dry. Use a purpose-made bicycle chain lube — it costs ₹150 and saves a ₹3,000 cassette.

Frequently asked questions
Should I use wet or dry chain lube in India?
Dry lube through the hot, dusty months and wet or wax-based lube through the monsoon. A wax lube such as Squirt (₹150) is a reasonable year-round compromise.
How often should I clean my bike chain?
Degrease every third or fourth lube application, or immediately after any muddy or rainy ride. Lubing over old grime just traps grit against the rollers.
Is WD-40 okay for a bicycle chain?
No. Standard WD-40 is a solvent and water displacer, not a chain lubricant. It strips the chain and leaves it dry.
