Kids' bicycle helmets in India: how to choose the right size and fit

A helmet only protects a child if it fits properly. Many children wear helmets that are too big, sit too far back on the head or have loose straps. This guide covers how to measure, how to check the fit and which kids' and universal helmets are in stock at InstaSport. This is general safety guidance, not medical advice.

Step 1: Measure your child's head

Use a soft tape measure and wrap it around the head about one finger-width above the eyebrows and ears, at the widest part. Note the measurement in centimetres and compare it with the size range on the helmet. If your child is between sizes, try both. Children grow, but do not buy a helmet that is much too big, because it will not protect well. Look for an adjustable dial or pads to fine tune the fit.

Step 2: Check the fit with the 2-V-1 rule

  • 2 fingers: The helmet should sit about two finger-widths above the eyebrows, covering the forehead, not tilted back.
  • V: The side straps should form a V just below the ears.
  • 1 finger: You should fit only one finger between the chin and the strap when it is buckled.

Ask your child to open the mouth wide. The strap should feel snug on a yawn. Then shake their head gently: the helmet should not slide around or move forward over the eyes.

Step 3: Look for comfort and ventilation

Children will not wear a helmet that is hot or itchy. Vents help in Indian summers, soft pads help comfort and a bright colour improves visibility for traffic. Light weight matters, especially for smaller kids. A helmet that is comfortable will actually be worn on every ride.

Step 4: Know when to replace

Replace a helmet after any hard impact, even if it looks fine, because the foam inside may be compressed. Replace it also if it is cracked, the straps are frayed or your child has outgrown it. Many manufacturers suggest replacing helmets every few years, so check the maker's guidance.

Kids' and universal helmets at InstaSport

The CMB Naza Helmet Kids is priced at ₹1,790 and is made for children. The CMB Universal Helmet costs ₹750 and is a more affordable option, so check the size range on the product page to make sure it fits your child's head measurement. For storage and wet rides, there are also accessories: an Abus Helmet Bag at ₹995 and an Abus Helmet Rain Cap at ₹1,590.

Making helmets a habit

Set an example by wearing your own helmet. Make it a no-helmet-no-ride rule from the first day, and let your child choose the colour, since children are more likely to wear something they picked. For adult options and safety technology, read our MIPS helmet guide.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a bicycle helmet fits my child?

Use the 2-V-1 rule: the helmet sits about two fingers above the eyebrows, the side straps form a V below the ears, and only one finger fits between the chin and the strap.

Should I buy a bigger helmet so my child can grow into it?

No. A helmet that is too large can shift on impact and protect poorly. Choose the correct size now and use the adjustment dial or pads to fine tune the fit.

When should a kids' helmet be replaced?

Replace it after any hard impact, if it is cracked or the straps are damaged, or when your child has outgrown it.
