Mumbai Marathon 2027 prep: why September is the month that matters

Mumbai Marathon 2027 prep really begins in September, not December. The race falls in mid-January, which puts roughly 16 to 18 weeks between the end of the monsoon and the start line at CSMT. That is exactly how long a sensible marathon build takes — and, more usefully, it is exactly how long a pair of shoes needs to stop feeling new.

Most first-timers get the order wrong. They train in whatever they own, then panic-buy shoes, a belt and a vest in the first week of January. Race morning becomes a test of gear they have never used. The fix is boring and it works: buy early, buy in the order below, and let October and November do the breaking-in for you.

What to buy in September: shoes first, everything else later

Your daily trainer is the single biggest purchase of the cycle and the one that needs the most time on your feet. If you buy in September, you get 12 to 14 weeks to confirm the fit is right, and enough runway to swap if it is not.

Two practical rules for Indian runners. First, buy half a size up from your street shoe — feet swell in humidity and on long runs. Second, buy two pairs if your budget allows, and alternate them; damp foam from a sweaty 20K run does not fully recover in 12 hours, and rotating also spreads the wear across your build.

How many kilometres should my marathon shoes have before race day?

Aim for somewhere between 60 and 150 kilometres on the pair you plan to race in. Below that they can still feel unfamiliar; well above 400 to 500 kilometres and the midsole is usually past its best. If you buy in September and run one long session a week in them, you will land in that window comfortably by January.

October: socks, chafing and the boring stuff that decides your race

October in Mumbai is still warm and sticky. This is the month to solve friction, because friction is what ends most first marathons — not fitness.

Buy three or four pairs of synthetic running socks and retire your cotton ones. Cotton holds sweat, bunches, and turns into sandpaper somewhere around the 25th kilometre. Test anti-chafe balm on your longest run, not in race week. Work out where your number bib, watch strap and shorts seams rub, and fix each one while you still have three months to experiment.

November and December: hydration, fuelling and the dress rehearsal

By November your long runs cross two hours and you need a plan for carrying fluid and fuel. Whether that is a handheld flask, a waist belt or a light vest is personal — what matters is that you decide in November and use the same setup for every long run after that.

December is the dress rehearsal month. Pick one long run and treat it as a full simulation: same shoes, same socks, same shorts, same breakfast, same watch settings, same start time as the race. Anything that irritates you at 18 kilometres will be twice as loud at 35.

What not to buy before Mumbai Marathon 2027

Skip the race-week impulse buys. New shoes in January are the classic mistake — even a fantastic shoe is a risk if your feet have not met it. The same goes for a brand-new hydration vest, compression tights you have never run in, or a fuel product you first taste at the expo. If it is not already part of your routine by the end of December, it does not belong on the start line.

Frequently asked questions

When should I buy running shoes for the Mumbai Marathon?

September is ideal. It gives you 12 to 18 weeks to confirm the fit, put 60 to 150 kilometres on the pair, and swap them if something is wrong — all well before race week.

Do I need two pairs of running shoes for marathon training?

Not strictly, but rotating two pairs helps. Foam recovers between runs, damp shoes get a chance to dry out in humid Indian conditions, and the total wear is spread across both pairs.

What should I avoid buying in Mumbai Marathon race week?

Anything you have not already run in. New shoes, a new hydration vest, untested fuel or new compression wear are the most common causes of avoidable race-day problems.
