Pickleball Warm-Up Routine for Beginners in India: 8 Minutes Before You Play
Most pickleball niggles start in the first few games. This 8-minute warm-up and a few cheap accessories help you start cold courts and cold muscles safely.
Pickleball warm-up routine for beginners: why it matters
Pickleball looks gentle, but it asks your body for quick stops, sideways steps, lunges and fast hands at the kitchen line. Many new players walk straight onto court and then feel sore calves, tight shoulders or a grumpy wrist in the first few games. A short pickleball warm-up routine raises your body temperature, wakes up the joints you use most and makes the first rally feel better. This is general guidance, not medical advice; if you have an injury or health condition, check with a doctor or physiotherapist.
The 8-minute routine
Minutes 1 to 2: raise your heart rate
Walk briskly or jog gently around the court, then add side-shuffles along the baseline. Aim to feel warm, not tired.
Minutes 3 to 4: legs and hips
- 10 bodyweight squats
- 6 walking lunges with a gentle twist toward the front leg
- 10 leg swings per leg, front to back, holding the net post or fence for balance
- 10 heel raises to prepare your calves and Achilles
Minutes 5 to 6: shoulders, elbows and wrists
- 10 slow arm circles each way
- 10 light band pull-aparts
- 10 wrist circles each way and a few gentle wrist flexions
A light band such as the Latex-Free Resistance Band 4518 (₹449) is handy in your paddle bag for this part.
Minutes 7 to 8: on-court movement
Hit soft dinks with a partner, then add a few easy volleys, and finish with 2 or 3 short bursts to the kitchen line and back. Start your first games at 70 per cent effort.
Gear that supports a good warm-up
Shoes with lateral support
Running shoes are built for straight-line motion, not sideways stops. A court shoe with lateral support helps your ankles on those side-steps. Our guide on pickleball court shoes vs running shoes explains why. In stock are the Puls8 Pickleball Shoes (₹1,499) and the Vector X Marvel 2.0 Indoor Badminton/Pickleball Shoes (₹1,499).
Wrist support
If your wrist feels fatigued, a simple support can make you feel more comfortable. The Adjustable Wrist Support 4202 costs ₹249. A support is not a substitute for rest; if pain lingers, see a professional. For elbow-related issues, read our pickleball elbow guide.
Balls for warm-up rallies
Keep a few spare balls in your bag for warm-up. The Puls8 Pro Pickleball Balls (₹300) and Franklin X-40 Optic Pickleball Balls (₹720) are good starting points. If you are still building your kit, our pickleball gear starter guide lists the basics.
After you play: a 3-minute cool-down
Walk for a minute, then hold gentle stretches for your calves, quads and shoulders for 20 to 30 seconds each. Drink water and take your shoes off to let them air out.
