Recovery scores have gone from a niche endurance-athlete obsession to something your gym buddy quotes at you before a Sunday run. Open any watch app in 2026 and you are handed a single number out of 100 that claims to tell you how ready your body is to train. Indian runners, cyclists and gym-goers are buying into it fast — and a fair number are training worse because of it.

Here is what the number is actually made of, what it can and cannot tell you, and which metrics are worth your attention.

What is inside a recovery or readiness score?

Nearly every platform builds its score from the same four ingredients: overnight heart rate variability (HRV), resting heart rate, sleep duration and quality, and your recent training load. The weightings differ.   1. Sleep duration. The least glamorous metric and comfortably the most predictive. If you are averaging under six hours, no recovery algorithm has anything useful to add.
  2. Resting heart rate trend. A resting HR sitting five or more beats above your own baseline for several days is a genuinely useful flag — for accumulated fatigue, dehydration or illness coming on.
  3. HRV trend, not HRV today. Look at the seven-day rolling figure.
  4. Training load balance. Whether the volume you have done in the last week is in line with the last month.
  5. How you feel. Still the best sensor you own. If the watch says 38 and you feel great, go and train.

India-specific things that will skew your score

  • Heat and humidity. Training in 33°C and 80% humidity elevates heart rate and suppresses overnight HRV for a couple of nights. That is your body responding to heat load, not a sign you are overtrained.
  • Late dinners. Eating heavily after 9:30 p.m. — normal in much of India — measurably depresses overnight HRV and sleep quality scores.
  • Festival season. Late nights across Navratri, Durga Puja and Diwali will tank your scores for a fortnight. Expect it, and do not respond by cutting all training.
  • Air quality. In Delhi-NCR through October and November, a low readiness score may simply reflect the air you are breathing rather than your training.
