Running Shoe Sizing in India: Why Most Runners Should Go Half a Size Up
Black toenails and blisters? You may be wearing the wrong size. How to size running shoes properly, with a simple at-home fit test.
Running shoe sizing in India: why half a size up is often right
Ask a room full of runners about black toenails, blisters or numb toes and you will get a lot of nods. A common cause is a running shoe that is simply too small. Running shoe sizing works differently from casual shoes, and many runners are better off going half a size up from their everyday size. Here is how to measure, test and choose the right running shoe size in India.
Why your running shoe should be bigger than your normal shoe
When you run, your foot swells slightly and slides forward on each landing, especially on downhills and longer runs, and in hot Indian weather. A snug casual fit becomes tight after a few kilometres. Runners are usually advised to leave roughly a thumb's width (about 1 to 1.5 cm) between the longest toe and the front of the shoe. For many people that means half a size up, though it depends on the brand and model.
How to measure at home
- Measure your feet in the evening, when they are slightly larger.
- Stand on a sheet of paper, trace your foot, and measure heel to longest toe.
- Measure both feet and size for the larger one.
- Compare against the brand's size chart, since Nike, Brooks, Asics and Skechers each fit differently.
The thumb-width fit test
Try shoes on with the socks you run in. Stand up and press down at the front: you should feel about a thumb's width of space beyond your longest toe. Your heel should stay put without slipping, the midfoot should feel snug but not squeezed, and your toes should wiggle freely. Walk, jog on the spot, and check that nothing rubs.
Width and shape matter too
Length is only half of the story. If your forefoot is wide, a shoe of the right length can still pinch, and going up a size to fix width usually creates heel slip. Look for models sold in wide options, or with a roomier toe box. Flat or high-arched feet may also feel different in different shoes, so try a few.

When to replace your shoes
Running shoes typically last several hundred kilometres. Signs it is time include flattened cushioning, worn outsoles and new aches after runs. If you get recurring foot pain, check your fit first and see a physio or podiatrist if it persists. This is general information, not medical advice.

Frequently asked questions
Should I buy running shoes a size bigger?
Many runners are comfortable half a size up from their casual size, because feet swell and slide forward when running. Use the thumb-width rule and check each brand's size chart.
How much space should be in front of my toes in running shoes?
About a thumb's width (roughly 1 to 1.5 cm) between your longest toe and the front of the shoe.
Why do my toenails turn black when I run?
Repeated toe impact against the front of a shoe that is too short or too tight is a common cause. A better-fitting size often helps; see a professional if it persists.
