Tennis Racket Grip Size Guide: How to Measure and Choose (India)
The wrong grip size strains your forearm and ruins control. Here is how to measure your grip size and what to do if you are between sizes.
This tennis racket grip size guide shows you how to measure your hand and pick the right handle. Grip size is easy to ignore, but a handle that is too big restricts your wrist, and one that is too small makes you squeeze harder, which can tire your forearm.
Tennis racket grip size guide: the standard sizes
Adult grip sizes run from 0 to 5 (often written 4 1/8 to 4 5/8 inches, or L0 to L5 in some markets). Most adult players use 2 (4 1/4) or 3 (4 3/8). Juniors use smaller handles, and junior frames are labelled 00 or 0 or by racket length such as 21, 23 or 25 inches. Always confirm the exact size on the product page.
How to measure your grip size
- Ruler method: open your dominant hand flat, fingers together. Measure from the top crease of your ring finger's base (the lower palm crease) to the tip of the ring finger. That length in inches is roughly your size.
- Finger test: hold the racket in an eastern forehand grip. You should be able to fit the index finger of your other hand between your ring-finger tips and your palm. If there is no room, the handle is too big; if there is lots of room, it is too small.
Between sizes? Go smaller and build up
It is easy to build a handle up with overgrips but impossible to shrink one. If you are between sizes, choose the smaller. Pair it with a good overgrip, and consider a dampener like the Babolat Flag Tennis Dampener (₹206) for feel on off-centre hits.
Junior rackets and grip sizing
For kids, racket length matters first, then grip. The HEAD Novak 21 Junior Tennis Racquet (Grip 00) (₹2,449) is a 21-inch frame with a 00 grip for ages 4 to 6. The Yonex JR 25 Strung Tennis Racquet (G0) (₹2,519) is a 25-inch strung frame with a G0 grip, and the Head Speed 23 Tennis Racket (₹2,567) is a 23-inch option for the in-between age group. Check that your child can hold the racket comfortably in a relaxed hand.
