Treadmill listings shout about horsepower, but the number most brands print is the one that matters least. Here is how to read HP ratings and how much motor you actually need.
Treadmill motor HP explained: peak HP vs continuous duty
Treadmill motor HP is the most quoted and least understood spec in the Indian home fitness market. The reason is that brands print two very different numbers and rarely label which one you are looking at.
- Peak HP (PHP) is the maximum the motor can produce for a few seconds — typically at startup. It is a marketing number.
- Continuous Duty HP (CHP) is what the motor can sustain indefinitely without overheating. It is the number that determines whether your treadmill survives.
Peak is usually 1.5 to 2 times continuous. So a "3.0 HP" treadmill may well be a 1.5 CHP machine. If a listing does not say CHP or "continuous", assume it is peak and mentally halve it.
How much treadmill HP do you actually need?
Match the motor to the heaviest regular user and the fastest thing you will regularly do on it, not to the aspirational version of your training.

An under-specified motor does not fail dramatically. It runs hot, the belt speed becomes inconsistent under foot strike, and the controller board — usually the most expensive single part — degrades over a year or two. That is why undersizing is a false economy.
Add for body weight, add for running
Two adjustments matter in practice. First, if the main user is over 90 kg, step up one bracket — motor load scales with mass. Second, running loads a motor far harder than walking, because each foot strike briefly decelerates the belt and the motor must recover the speed. A machine that is perfectly happy at 6 km/h will labour at 12 km/h.
What matters more than HP
Three specs deserve as much attention as the motor.
- Running surface size. Walkers can live with 110 × 40 cm. Runners need at least 125 × 45 cm; taller runners want 140 cm plus, or they will shorten their stride to avoid the console.
- Maximum user weight. Treat the rated figure as optimistic. Leave 15–20 kg of headroom above the heaviest user.
- Deck cushioning. The difference between a treadmill you keep using and one you stop using is usually how your knees feel after 30 minutes, not the motor.
