What does 0.5% and 0.75% chain wear actually mean?

Chain wear is measured as elongation over a standard length. A new chain has pins spaced at exactly 1/2 inch (12.7mm) pitch. At 0.5% wear, the pins have moved 0.635mm further apart over the gauge length. The gauge hooks engage the chain — if the lower hook drops between links, wear has exceeded the threshold.

Does this work on e-bike chains?

Yes for most e-bike chains — they use standard roller chain formats across 1-12 speed ranges. Some specialty e-bike chains with reinforced side plates may give slightly different gauge readings, but the principle applies.

Can I check chain wear without a dedicated tool?

Technically yes — measure 24 links of new chain (should be exactly 30.48cm / 12 inches) and compare to your current chain. At 0.5% wear this becomes 30.63cm. But a dedicated go/no-go gauge is faster, more convenient, and less error-prone for a monthly check.
