How to inflate a football is the most commonly botched piece of equipment maintenance in Indian sport. Walk onto any club ground, school field or turf centre and squeeze the match ball: more often than not it is rock hard. The assumption is that harder means better, and it is wrong on every count — harder balls hurt more to head, feel worse to strike, travel unpredictably and wear out faster.
Every ball made by a reputable manufacturer has its recommended pressure printed near the valve, usually in PSI and sometimes in bar. That number is not a suggestion. It is the pressure at which the bladder, panels and stitching were designed to work together.

The Indian conditions problem: temperature and pressure
Air pressure rises with temperature, and Indian temperature swings are large. A ball inflated correctly at 6 a.m. in a Delhi winter is over-pressure by noon. A ball inflated in an air-conditioned indoor court plays differently the moment it goes outside in May.
The practical habit: check pressure at the temperature and time you will actually play, not the night before in a cool room. For teams that play both morning and evening slots, a quick gauge check before each session takes thirty seconds and saves balls.
The same physics applies to storage. A fully inflated ball left in a car boot in an Indian summer is a genuine burst risk. Store balls at slightly below playing pressure and top up before use.
Needles, pumps and the mistake that kills valves
The single most common way to ruin a ball is to push a dry needle into the valve. The needle tears the rubber valve sleeve, and from then on the ball leaks slowly and no amount of pumping fixes it.
Do this instead:
- Moisten the needle with a drop of water, glycerine or proper valve oil before inserting. Never use household oil.
- Insert straight, perpendicular to the ball surface. Angling the needle is what tears the sleeve.
- Pump slowly and check with a gauge every few strokes. It is far easier to add air than to judge how much you released.
- Remove straight, holding the valve area steady with your other hand.
- Never over-inflate then bleed down as a routine method — the stretch stresses the bladder every single time.
