The bottom bracket is the bearing assembly that lets your crank spin inside the frame. It is a small, cheap part that carries the entire force of your pedalling, sits at the lowest point of the bike where every bit of road spray collects, and is responsible for a large share of the mystery creaks that drive cyclists to distraction.

There are two families. Threaded bottom brackets screw into threads cut in the frame shell. Press-fit bottom brackets are pushed into a smooth, unthreaded shell. Everything else is variation on shell width, shell diameter and bearing type.

BSA threaded: the Indian-conditions default

BSA — also written 1.37" × 24 TPI, or English threading — is the long-standing threaded standard. Shell widths are 68 mm for road and 73 mm for mountain bikes. The cups thread in, which means a small amount of contamination or a slightly imperfect frame does not automatically produce a creak, and removal needs only a splined tool rather than a press.

For India this matters more than it does in dry climates. Monsoon water ingress is the main killer of bottom bracket bearings, and a threaded interface tolerates the resulting corrosion far better than a press fit does. Press-fit: lighter, stiffer, and the source of most creaks

Press-fit standards — BB86/92, PF30, BB30 and their relatives — let frame makers use a wider shell and a larger crank spindle without threads, which allows lighter carbon frames and stiffer bottom bracket areas. When tolerances are perfect, press-fit is excellent. When the shell is a fraction out of round, or water has worked its way in, you get the creak that no amount of chain lube will fix.

Ceramic vs steel bearings: is the upgrade worth it?

Ceramic bearings are harder, rounder and lower-friction than steel. The honest measurement is that the saving is a couple of watts at racing power — real but small. For most riders, a well-sealed quality steel bearing replaced when it gets rough is the better value.

When to replace, and how to make it last

Drop the chain off the chainring and spin the cranks by hand. If you feel grinding, notches or side-to-side play, the bearings are done. Typical service life in Indian conditions is 8,000–15,000 km, dropping sharply if you ride through monsoon and pressure-wash the bike afterwards. The two habits that extend it most: never point a pressure washer at the bottom bracket shell, and re-grease or replace at the first hint of roughness rather than waiting for the creak.
