CA Unveils Women and Girls Action Plan to Transform Women's Cricket

CA Unveils Women and Girls Action Plan to Transform Women's Cricket

Cricket Australia (CA) has unveiled a comprehensive Women and Girls Action Plan, aiming to transform women's cricket in the country. The plan includes a reduction in the WBBL season to 40 games plus finals, aligning it with the BBL and creating a new state-based T20 competition to provide additional opportunities for domestic players. The WBBL season reduction was driven by the need to accommodate the T20 World Cup and a women's ODI series against India. However, CA has ensured that the number of games on free-to-air TV remains the same. To compensate for the reduced playing opportunities, CA has introduced a new state-based T20 competition that will run alongside the WNCL. This competition will serve as a warm-up for the WBBL and increase female domestic player salaries.Beyond the restructuring of the WBBL, CA has set ambitious goals for women's cricket. The organization aims to increase total revenue by AU$100 million in the next ten years, increase participation for girls aged 5-12 from 25,000 to 100,000, and invest AU$500 million in women's cricket infrastructure. CA also aims to have at least 40% female representation in key positions across Australian cricket. To enhance the visibility of women's cricket, CA has committed to scheduling more matches in major Australian stadiums. The women's Ashes Test at the MCG early next year will mark the 90th anniversary of women's Test cricket. Australia and England will also play women's T20Is at Adelaide Oval and the SCG during the multiformat series.Australian star allrounder Ellyse Perry welcomed the initiatives, stating that they will sustain and enhance the growth of women's cricket in Australia. She emphasized the importance of increased sponsorship and broadcast deals to reflect the growing interest in women's sport.

Sunrisers Spin to Seven-Wicket Win over The Blaze

Sunrisers Spin to Seven-Wicket Win over The Blaze

Sunrisers' Mady Villiers' spin wizardry proved too much for The Blaze as they cruised to a seven-wicket victory in a rain-shortened encounter at Chelmsford. The former England white-ball international spun her magic, claiming 3 for 18 from nine overs, as The Blaze, missing several key players, were dismissed for a paltry 87 in a game reduced to 42 overs per side.England U19 Jodi Grewcock complemented Villiers' efforts with 1 for 7 from eight overs, leaving The Blaze reeling at 52 for 6 after losing four wickets for four runs. Australian seamer Nicola Hancock then polished off the tail with 3 for 20.Sunrisers faced some early setbacks in their chase, but skipper Grace Scrivens' unbeaten 46 guided them to victory in the 21st over. Villiers fittingly sealed the win with the winning runs. The match was delayed due to overnight and morning rain, and the overcast conditions and grassy pitch favored the bowlers. Scrivens' decision to field first proved astute as The Blaze struggled to cope with the spin duo of Villiers and Grewcock.Marie Kelly, who was dropped early on, was dismissed by Hancock, while Teresa Graves fell to Kate Coppack. Daisy Mullan and Nadine de Klerk briefly threatened a fightback, but Villiers and Grewcock's introduction proved decisive.Villiers trapped de Klerk in front and bowled Mullan, while Grewcock dismissed Ella Claridge. Sarah Glenn's wicket gave Villiers her third scalp, and The Blaze's recovery hopes were dashed as Hancock and Coppack cleaned up the tail.Sunrisers, who had been bowled out for 150 in a heavy defeat to Thunder three days earlier, initially struggled in their chase. Ariana Dowse was dismissed by Grace Ballinger, and Cordelia Griffith was run out in a mix-up with Scrivens. However, Scrivens and Grewcock steadied the ship with a 40-run stand, and although Grewcock departed before the end, Sunrisers cruised to victory, with Villiers hitting the winning runs.

Maia Bouchier Targets Top-Order Spot for England's T20 World Cup Bid

Maia Bouchier Targets Top-Order Spot for England's T20 World Cup Bid

Maia Bouchier, England's rising star, has set her sights on solidifying her position as the team's top-order batter ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup in Bangladesh. The 25-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough winter tour of New Zealand, where she seized the opportunity to showcase her skills in the absence of senior players.Bouchier's promotion to the opening slot during the Sri Lanka series last summer proved fruitful, as she complemented Nat Sciver-Brunt's century with a career-best 95. However, it was her performance in the T20I series against New Zealand that truly cemented her status. Batting at No.3 in the first three matches, she made significant contributions, including a series-sealing 91 from 56 balls after being promoted to open in the fourth match."I've been waiting for that moment," Bouchier said. "I've really enjoyed my cricket and putting in some performances for England. Going into this summer, I'll do as much as I can to grab every opportunity and keep that spot now."Bouchier's success is the culmination of a settled run in the side, promised to her by head coach Jon Lewis last summer. Despite her impressive form in the Hundred, she had previously been limited to middle-order roles. However, her recent performances have outshone both Tammy Beaumont and Sophia Dunkley, making her a strong contender for a first-choice opening spot at the World Cup."It was all about being patient for that moment," Bouchier said. "I guess I had to do those tough years to get to that point, but playing in those [lower-order] positions meant I had to be able to adapt quickly, so that has only helped me going up to the top of the order."England's summer schedule includes home series against Pakistan and New Zealand, followed by the Hundred. Bouchier is confident that the team has addressed its shortcomings against spin, a notable weakness in recent years."Bangladesh is going to be difficult, and spin is always a talking point, but really it comes down to the game situation and the ball in hand at that moment," Bouchier said. "Everyone has been working on playing to their strengths against spin, whether it's reverse-sweeping or long sweeps to the other side of the pitch."Bouchier also highlighted the importance of the MCC Foundation Hubs tournament, which provides opportunities for young girls to participate in cricket. She believes that the program's growth reflects the increasing interest in women's cricket."It's amazing," she said. "This foundation is there for kids and teenagers in that range, who don't know whether they want to play, but they're really interested in getting involved. It gives them access and brings the community together as well, which is exactly what you want."
