Skateboarding Is Growing in India: How to Choose Your First Skateboard (and Safety Gear)
Skateboarding is picking up in Indian cities. Here is how to choose your first skateboard and the safety gear that goes with it.
Skateboarding is growing in India: choosing your first board
Skate parks and street spots are slowly appearing in Indian cities, and more young riders are asking how to choose a first skateboard. The good news is that you do not need a pro setup to start. A complete, ready-to-ride board with the right size and basic protection is enough to learn balance, pushing and turning.
Complete board or custom setup?
Beginners should buy a complete skateboard, which comes with the deck, trucks, wheels and bearings already assembled. Custom setups let you choose each part, but they need some knowledge to match. Start complete, and upgrade parts once you know your style.
Picking the right size
Our two Cosco boards come in a junior and a senior version. The Cosco Skate Board Raider Jr. (₹1,300) suits younger riders, while the Cosco Skate Board Raider Sr. (₹1,600) is the pick for teens and adults. As a rule of thumb, the rider should stand comfortably with feet roughly shoulder-width apart and feel in control. Check the listing for deck dimensions and suggested rider details before buying.
Safety gear is not optional
Falls are part of learning. A helmet is the most important item, and wrist guards, knee pads and elbow pads come next. Within our range, the Padded Knee Guard Junior 4210 (₹249) is a budget protective option for young riders. For general knee support, see the Knee Support 4201 (₹349), and read our knee support guide before choosing.
Where to practise
- Start on smooth, flat ground with no traffic: a quiet car park, a school ground or a skate park.
- Avoid rough roads. Small stones and cracks can stop the wheels suddenly.
- Learn to push, balance and stop before trying turns or tricks.
- Practise falling safely by staying low and keeping your hands out of the way of wheels.
Skateboard vs roller skates vs inline skates
A skateboard has a steeper learning curve for balance than roller or inline skates, but it is more fun for many riders once the basics click. If your child is under about eight, roller skates are often an easier first step; see our roller skates guide. Adults who prefer a smoother glide can look at adult inline skating.
Care and maintenance
Keep the board dry, tighten loose trucks with a skate tool, and check the wheels for flat spots. A quick wipe after every session keeps the bearings turning smoothly.
