Hurricane-Ravaged Acapulco Tennis Tournament Restored for 2024In the wake of Hurricane Otis's devastating impact on Acapulco in October 2023, the Arena GNP Seguros, the venue for the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC, has undergone a remarkable four-month rebuilding effort. The tournament, a staple of the ATP 500 circuit since 2001, was initially scheduled to be held in 2024 but was postponed due to the hurricane's destruction.Despite the challenges, organizers Mextennis remained committed to hosting the event, recognizing its economic significance for the local community. The tournament generates over 11,000 jobs and contributes significantly to the city's economy.Over 200 million pesos were invested in the venue's restoration, involving 35 companies. The effort was driven by a sense of community and a desire to support Acapulco's recovery."We work with the community, with our thousands of collaborators and families united by the same cause: moving Acapulco forward," said Geoffrey Fernández, the tournament's director of operations. "We have achieved a lot together and together with the federal, state and municipal governments to make this event one of the best."The tournament's top seeds, Alexander Zverev and Holger Rune, along with defending champion Alex de Minaur, Taylor Fritz, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Casper Ruud, Tommy Paul, and Frances Tiafoe, will headline the event. Fernández praised the players' support, which he credited for making the tournament possible.Qualifying for the tournament begins on Saturday, with main-draw play running from February 26 through March 2. The event will not only provide world-class tennis but also serve as a symbol of Acapulco's resilience and recovery.
