Solinco's Hyper-G Hybrid: Precise Customization for Tennis Players

Solinco's Hyper-G Hybrid: Precise Customization for Tennis Players

Hybrid Stringing: A Precise Customization for Tennis PlayersHybrid stringing, a technique that combines two different strings in a single string bed, has become a popular choice among discerning tennis players. This approach allows players to blend the benefits of different string types, mitigating their drawbacks.Traditionally, hybrid stringing involved combining polyester and multifilament strings. Polyester strings offer durability, spin, and control, but can be stiff and underpowered. Multifilament strings, on the other hand, are softer, more comfortable, and provide better pop, but lack durability and precision. However, a recent trend has emerged towards matching strings with similar characteristics. This precise customization enables players to refine specific playing needs and goals. The most popular hybrid setup in this segment is a poly/poly combination, which allows for adjustments in power, spin, and control.Solinco's Hyper-G Hybrid System exemplifies this trend. It combines the spin and bite of the shaped Hyper-G string with the predictability of Hyper-G Round. The original Hyper-G, released in 2014, has gained popularity among recreational and professional players alike. The Hyper-G Hybrid System offers two possible setups. Using Hyper-G Round in the mains (vertical strings) and Hyper-G in the crosses (horizontal strings) produces a more linear ball flight, appealing to players with flatter strokes who seek penetration and accuracy.Conversely, using Hyper-G in the mains and Hyper-G Round in the crosses results in a higher launch and more spin, benefiting players who rely on topspin for safety and control.Regardless of the configuration, the round string promotes easier sliding between the strings, reducing friction and wear, thereby extending the lifespan of the strings. The playability differences between a full bed of either string and a hybrid setup are subtle, catering to players who meticulously fine-tune their equipment for optimal feel and performance. Solinco's commitment to player-centric solutions makes the Hyper-G Hybrid an attractive option for Hyper-G enthusiasts and polyester string users alike. The Hyper-G Hybrid is available in 16L and 17 gauges, retailing for $13 per set.

The Unsung Heroes of Tennis: Tournament Stringers

The Unsung Heroes of Tennis: Tournament Stringers

Behind the Scenes: The Unsung Heroes of Tennis TournamentsIn the glamorous world of professional tennis, the spotlight often shines on the players, coaches, and sponsors. However, there's a group of individuals who play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of every tournament: the stringers. At major events like the BNP Paribas Open, the stringing room is a hub of activity. Led by Mitch Case, a PTR certified coach and USRSA Master Technician, a team of expert stringers work tirelessly to prepare racquets for the world's top players. The stringing room is a dedicated space equipped with 11 primary stringers and machines, a center area for racquet preparation, and a front desk for player interactions. The team consists of experienced stringers with Grand Slam and Masters 1000 experience.Case describes the atmosphere in the stringing room as "not very glamorous." Interactions with players are minimal, with most communication occurring through the front desk staff or team members. However, the stringers take pride in their work, knowing that a well-strung racquet can make a significant difference in a player's performance. The workload during a tournament is intense. During the early days, stringers handle over 300 racquets per day, with each stringer responsible for 30-40 racquets. The hours are long, with stringers arriving at 7-7:30 a.m. and often staying until the last match of the day.Stringers are assigned specific players to ensure consistency in technique and machine usage. However, there are exceptions, such as when a player needs an "on-court" stringing during a match.Case recalls a particularly stressful day when he had 14 racquets due at various times. He also mentions a player who requested the highest possible tension, resulting in a stringbed that moved when weaving crosses.Despite the challenges, Case finds the experience rewarding. He enjoys the camaraderie with his fellow stringers and the opportunity to collaborate with experts in the field. The challenge of stringing for the world's best players is also a source of motivation.
