Royal Challengers Bangalore head coach Andy Flower has ruled out applying for the vacant India head coach position, citing his preference for franchise cricket. The former Zimbabwe skipper made the announcement after his team's elimination from the Indian Premier League (IPL) playoffs.
Flower, 56, has a successful track record as a red-ball coach for England, guiding the Alastair Cook-led team to a Test series victory in India in 2012. He has also coached Lucknow Super Giants and is involved with various other franchises worldwide.
"I haven't applied. I won't be applying. I am happy with my involvement in the franchise game at the moment," Flower said at a press conference on Wednesday.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has invited applications for the India head coach role, with Rahul Dravid's tenure ending after the T20 World Cup. Gautam Gambhir has reportedly been approached, but neither the former India opener nor the BCCI has confirmed the development.
Flower explained that the demanding schedule of a national team coach is not something he is considering at this stage. "It's fascinating stuff and I'm working with some amazing organizations so I'm really happy with that at the moment," he said.
Flower's decision to prioritize franchise cricket highlights the growing popularity and financial rewards of the T20 format. Many top coaches and players are opting to work with franchises rather than national teams, which offer shorter contracts and less intense schedules.
