Gautam Gambhir, the former Indian cricketer and current mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), has remained tight-lipped about the possibility of taking over as the next head coach of the Indian cricket team. However, he emphasized the importance of treating all members of a team fairly, regardless of their individual status.
Gambhir, who led KKR to its third Indian Premier League (IPL) title this season, expressed his contentment with the team's success. He declined to comment on the head coach position, stating that he was currently focused on his role with KKR.
"It is difficult to answer that (the coach question). Right now, I am in a happy space having just finished the journey with KKR," Gambhir said at the 'Rise to Leadership' event organized by the Indian Chamber of Commerce.
Gambhir stressed the significance of treating all individuals in a team sport with respect and equality. "The team is the most important thing and individuals can't be the be-all-and-end-all in a team. If you focus on two or three people, just imagine what will happen to the others," he said.
"From the captain to the masseur, you cannot discriminate between people. You have to treat people equally. That's the most important culture and I will always have this philosophy," he added.
Commenting on the current state of white-ball cricket, which has become increasingly dominated by batters, Gambhir believes that the International Cricket Council (ICC) has a responsibility to ensure that all types of cricketers, including finger spinners, have an equal opportunity to succeed.
Gambhir also shared his admiration for KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan, describing him as "the best IPL owner." He revealed that they have never discussed cricket during their eight-year association.
