Gloucestershire Legend David Lawrence Diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease

David "Syd" Lawrence, a legendary Gloucestershire and England fast bowler, has been diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND). This devastating news has sent shockwaves through the sporting world, as Lawrence joins a growing list of athletes affected by this debilitating condition.

Lawrence, known for his powerful physique and blistering pace, represented England in five Tests and one ODI between 1988 and 1992. He also made 280 appearances for Gloucestershire, claiming an impressive 625 wickets for the club. In 2022, he became Gloucestershire's first black president, a testament to his pioneering spirit.

His diagnosis, announced by the club on Friday, has left the Gloucestershire community and the wider sporting fraternity reeling. Will Brown, the club's outgoing chief executive, expressed the collective devastation: "David is an icon of the game, a club legend, and a trailblazer. He is also the best of people, kind, loving, and an inspiration to us all."

Lawrence's career was tragically cut short at the age of 28 when he fractured his kneecap while bowling against New Zealand. Despite attempting a comeback five years later, he was forced to retire due to the severity of his injury. However, he remained active and pursued competitive bodybuilding in his later years.

In 2021, Lawrence spoke out about his experiences of racism at Gloucestershire, prompting the club to issue an unreserved apology. Since then, he has been actively involved in the African-Caribbean Engagement Programme in Bristol, using his platform to promote diversity and inclusion in cricket.

Ian Thomas, managing director of member services at the Professional Cricketers' Association (PCA), expressed the organization's shock and support: "David has been an inspiration throughout his career. We have no doubt he will continue to fight and show his determination to fight MND."

The PCA and the Professional Cricketers' Trust will provide unwavering support to Lawrence and his family during this challenging time. The sporting world stands united in its admiration for Lawrence's resilience and determination, and in its commitment to raising awareness and funding for MND research.
