Guyana Amazon Warriors Eye Back-to-Back CPL Titles in Home Final
The Guyana Amazon Warriors, after an 11-year wait for their maiden CPL trophy, are now on the cusp of defending their title. Led by the evergreen Imran Tahir, who became the first overseas bowler to reach 100 CPL wickets at the age of 45, the Warriors have assembled a formidable squad.
Tahir's spin trio, comprising Gudakesh Motie and Moeen Ali, has been a potent force on the spin-friendly Providence surfaces. The Warriors have also bolstered their batting with spin-hitters like Shimron Hetmyer, Shai Hope, and Moeen. Hetmyer, in particular, has been in scintillating form, reminding the world of his T20 prowess.
Standing in their way are the St Lucia Kings, led by another veteran campaigner, Faf du Plessis. Despite losing key players and tosses, the Kings have remained a formidable force under du Plessis' leadership. The 40-year-old is enjoying his most prolific CPL season, with 384 runs in 11 innings.
The Kings' batting also boasts Johnson Charles, who has reinvented himself as a 360-degree batter. While this is the Kings' third CPL final, it is du Plessis' first. However, he is no stranger to the pressure of a final, having been part of the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.
The Kings' coach, Daren Sammy, also has unfinished business, having lost to Trinbago Knight Riders in the 2020 final. Can he and du Plessis guide the Kings to their first CPL title?
