Young Australian batsman Jake Fraser-McGurk has a promising future in cricket despite missing out on a berth in the T20 World Cup, according to his Indian Premier League (IPL) team director, Sourav Ganguly.
Fraser-McGurk, 22, has impressed for the Delhi Capitals in the 2022 IPL season, scoring 330 runs in nine matches at a remarkable strike rate of over 234. Despite his impressive performances, he was not selected for Australia's T20 World Cup squad.
Ganguly, a former India captain, has praised Fraser-McGurk's fearless batting and believes he has a long career ahead of him. "He's hungry, he wants to play well," Ganguly said. "I know he missed out on the World Cup, Australia should have probably picked him."
Ganguly acknowledged that Australia has a wealth of talented players in the middle order, including David Warner, Travis Head, and Mitch Marsh, which may have contributed to Fraser-McGurk's omission. However, he emphasized that the young batsman has plenty of time to prove his worth.
"But he's just 22 and he has got a long career," Ganguly said. "For us, he is a game changer and that's what you need in this format."
Fraser-McGurk joined the Delhi Capitals as an injury replacement for South African paceman Lungi Ngidi. He had previously gone unsold at the IPL auction. In an interview with AFP, he stated that the T20 World Cup was not his primary focus.
Ricky Ponting, the Delhi Capitals coach, has described Fraser-McGurk as "a serious talent." His attacking style and ability to hit big sixes have drawn comparisons to Warner's early career.
Fraser-McGurk's omission from the Australian T20 World Cup squad has sparked debate among cricket experts. Some believe that he deserved a place in the team, while others argue that the selectors made the right decision given the abundance of experienced players available.
Regardless of his World Cup disappointment, Fraser-McGurk has shown that he has the potential to become a valuable asset for Australia in the future. His performances in the IPL have caught the attention of many, and he is likely to receive more opportunities to prove his worth in the coming years.
