Lamb and Guest Star as Derbyshire Dominate Gloucestershire on Day One
Derbyshire's Matt Lamb and Brooke Guest put on a batting masterclass on the opening day of their Vitality County Championship Second Division clash with Gloucestershire at Bristol. Lamb's career-best 186 not out and Guest's 95 propelled Derbyshire to a commanding 434 for 5 at stumps.
Lamb, who faced 228 deliveries, struck 28 fours and a six in his marathon innings. He shared a mammoth 227-run partnership with Guest, who hit 11 fours in his 178-ball knock. The duo rescued Derbyshire from a precarious 69 for 3, exploiting Gloucestershire's wayward bowling and the short boundaries at the Seat Unique Stadium.
Aneurin Donald contributed a valuable 67 to a century partnership with Lamb, as Derbyshire plundered 59 fours and three sixes throughout the day. Beau Webster was the pick of the Gloucestershire bowlers, claiming 3 for 82 in 19 overs.
Derbyshire's positive approach was evident from the outset, reaching 126 for 3 by lunch. However, Gloucestershire struck three quick blows to halt their progress. Luis Reece (27) and David Lloyd (28) fell to Webster, while Marchant de Lange dismissed Wayne Madsen for a duck.
Lamb and Guest seized the initiative after lunch, batting with confidence and composure. Lamb reached his fifty off 71 balls, while Guest followed suit off 96 deliveries. Gloucestershire missed several chances to dismiss the pair, with Lamb dropped on 13 and Guest on 27.
The double century partnership was broken when Guest edged de Lange to second slip for 95. However, Lamb continued to dominate, reaching his century off 143 balls. He extended his boundary count to 24, including a glorious cover drive off Ed Middleton.
With the skies clearing, Derbyshire capitalized on the improved batting conditions. Lamb and Donald attacked the spin of Price and Middleton, with Lamb reaching his 150 off Taylor's bowling. Donald also reached a half-century before falling to Webster for 67.
Lamb surpassed his previous best score of 173, set for Warwickshire against Essex in 2019. He left the field to a standing ovation, having played a pivotal role in Derbyshire's strong start to the match.
