Punjab Kings Skipper Shikhar Dhawan Sidelined with Shoulder Injury

Punjab Kings' skipper Shikhar Dhawan is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury, leaving the team in a precarious position as they struggle to find their footing in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season.

Dhawan, who has been the team's leading run-getter with 152 runs from five innings, suffered the injury during a match against Rajasthan Royals. Spin-bowling coach Sunil Joshi confirmed that Dhawan is undergoing rehabilitation and is doubtful for the upcoming match against Gujarat Titans on April 21.

The absence of Dhawan has exposed the Kings' batting woes, with the top-order failing to provide a solid foundation. Jonny Bairstow, Dhawan's opening partner, has also struggled, scoring just 96 runs in six innings. Prabhsimran Singh and Jitesh Sharma have also been inconsistent, leaving the team heavily reliant on their lower-order batters.

Joshi emphasized the need for the top-order to step up and take responsibility, especially with the World Cup squad selection on the horizon. He acknowledged that the team has addressed their shortcomings in the power play but stressed that they need to find a more effective approach to scoring runs.

The Kings' bowling unit, led by overseas duo Sam Curran and Kagiso Rabada, has been a bright spot for the team. However, the Indian pair of Arshdeep Singh and Harshal Patel have been easy targets for batters. Joshi expressed confidence in their ability to bounce back and contribute more effectively.

With just two wins and four losses from their first six matches, the Kings find themselves in seventh place in the IPL standings. Joshi emphasized the importance of every game and the team's determination to improve their performance.
