Surrey on Verge of Fifth County Championship Win Despite Worcestershire Resistance
Worcestershire's valiant resistance on day three of their Vitality County Championship clash with Surrey proved insufficient as the visitors remain on course for their fifth win of the season.
Surrey resumed the day with a 131-run lead and quickly wrapped up Worcestershire's first innings, claiming the final three wickets before lunch. Jake Libby's 77 was the highlight for the hosts, but Surrey's bowlers, led by Jordan Taylor (3-19) and Dan Lawrence (3-49), kept them in check.
Enforcing the follow-on, Surrey faced a determined response from Gareth Roderick and Kashif Ali. The pair put on a 135-run partnership for the second wicket, frustrating the Surrey attack. However, Clark's three wickets in the final session turned the game back in Surrey's favor.
Roderick (63) and Kashif (66) both reached half-centuries, but their dismissals in quick succession left Worcestershire reeling. Rob Jones and Ethan Brookes also fell cheaply, leaving the hosts still 71 runs behind with five wickets remaining.
England spin bowling coach Jeetan Patel was present at New Road and observed Shoaib Bashir and Lawrence before the start of play. Bashir, on loan from Somerset, and Lawrence both contributed to Surrey's success, with Lawrence dismissing Allison and Finch in the first innings.
Surrey's victory would extend their lead at the top of the Division One standings, while Worcestershire face an uphill battle to avoid defeat.
