Northamptonshire's hopes of securing their first victory of the season dwindled as Sussex's bowlers delivered a decisive blow late on Day 3 at Wantage Road. Set a daunting target of 284, Northamptonshire's batting lineup faltered, leaving them 147 runs short of victory.
Emilio Gay's valiant 67 had provided a glimmer of hope for the home side, but his dismissal and that of skipper Luke Procter in quick succession extinguished their chances. Nathan McAndrew's leg-before dismissal of Gay and Jack Carson's off-spin trickery that induced Procter to edge to Simpson left Northamptonshire reeling at 137 for 4.
Earlier in the day, Procter had played a pivotal role with the ball, claiming season-best figures of 4 for 45 as Sussex were bowled out for 237 in their second innings. Ben Sanderson also chipped in with 3 for 44.
Sussex's opening day dominance continued into the second innings, with Tom Alsop departing in the first over. Sanderson and Broad exploited the movement and bounce of the surface, dismissing Sean Hunt and Raphy Weatherall respectively.
James Coles and Oli Carter provided some resistance, but Procter's pinpoint accuracy and Broad's seam and bounce proved too much. John Simpson's 40 offered some respite, but McAndrew's valuable 22 and Procter's late wickets left Northamptonshire with a mountain to climb.
Northamptonshire's chase began promisingly, with Prithvi Shaw and Gay forging a 69-run partnership. However, Hunt's dismissal of Shaw and Simpson's missed chance to remove Gay proved costly. Gay eventually reached his half-century, but his departure and Procter's subsequent dismissal left Northamptonshire's hopes hanging by a thread.
Matthew Breetzke and Rob Keogh will resume on Day 4 with the daunting task of salvaging a draw and preventing Sussex from extending their lead at the top of Vitality County Championship Division Two.
