Washington Sundar, India's rising spin-bowling all-rounder, has expressed his determination to seize the opportunity to stake his claim for the vacant spin-bowling all-rounder's slot in the Indian T20 side. The position became available after Ravindra Jadeja's recent retirement from the shortest format of the game.
Sundar has impressed in the ongoing five-match T20 series against Zimbabwe, showcasing his skills with both bat and ball. In the third T20, he claimed three wickets for just 15 runs, earning him the player of the match award.
"I need to do well where I am good at and what I am capable of, especially with my preparation. I need to give my 100% every single day. That's something that I have not compromised on," Sundar said after the match.
The Tamil Nadu off-spinner believes that his meticulous preparation keeps him focused and confident in his abilities. "It keeps me in the present and obviously I am very confident as well (about his skills). It's a great opportunity for me to play for India, and I am blessed with it," he added.
Sundar acknowledges the tough competition from other spin-bowling all-rounders, such as Axar Patel, who was India's number one choice in the T20 World Cup. However, he remains determined to improve his craft and secure his place in the team.
"I need to keep my job consistently and keep preparing and keep getting better. That way everything will be taken care of," he said.
Sundar's performances in the Zimbabwe series have strengthened his case for a regular spot in the Indian T20 side. His ability to contribute with both bat and ball makes him a valuable asset to any team. As the race for the spin-bowling all-rounder's slot intensifies, Sundar is poised to make a strong claim for the position.
