Pre-Winter Bicycle Service Checklist for India (2026-27): Chain, Tyres and Brakes
Before cold-morning rides start, give your bike a 45-minute service. This checklist covers chain, tyres, brakes and bolts, with tools you can buy in India.
Pre-winter bicycle service checklist: get your bike ready in under an hour
October and November are the best cycling months in much of India: cooler mornings, clearer skies and fewer rain delays. If your bike has been parked since the monsoon, a quick service now will make rides smoother and safer. This checklist is for home mechanics and uses simple tools. For a broader introduction, see our monsoon bicycle maintenance checklist.
1. Wash and inspect
Wipe the frame, wheels and drivetrain with a damp cloth. As you clean, look for cracks near welds, bent wheels, frayed cables and worn brake pads. Our guide to washing a bicycle at home covers the right products.
2. Degrease and lube the chain
A dry, gritty chain after the monsoon wears out gears quickly. Apply a degreaser such as the Finish Line Speed Bike Degreaser (₹1,122), wipe it clean, and then add one drop of lube per link. The Finish Line No Drip Chain Luber (₹825) is a simple option. Choose dry or wet lube based on conditions; see wet vs dry chain lube. Wipe off excess so dust does not stick.
3. Tyres and tubes
- Check for cracks, embedded stones and worn tread.
- Inflate to the pressure printed on the tyre sidewall; our tyre pressure guide explains how rider weight affects it.
- Carry a spare tube and tools. The Lezyne Matrix tyre levers (₹390) and Birzman puncture patches (₹425) cover roadside punctures.
4. Brakes
Squeeze each lever: it should engage firmly without touching the handlebar. Check pad wear lines and make sure pads hit the rim or rotor squarely. If they are down to the wear line, replace them. Brake work should be done carefully; if you are unsure, visit a mechanic.
5. Bolts and fit
Use a basic tool such as the CMB Allen key and multi-spanner kit (₹150) to check the saddle, stem, handlebar and wheel nuts. Do not over-tighten, especially on carbon parts. We cover what to stock in our home tool kit guide.
6. Lights and visibility
Winter mornings are dark and often hazy. Test your lights, and add a rear light such as the Lezyne KTV Drive+ Rear Light (₹2,125) if you ride before sunrise. Our bike lights guide explains lumens and modes.
When to see a mechanic
If gears skip after cleaning, the wheel wobbles, or the brakes feel soft, go to a workshop. A basic home service saves money, but safety parts deserve a professional eye when you are not confident.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I service my bicycle?
A quick check before every season and a clean-and-lube every few weeks is a sensible routine. Heavy or wet riding calls for more frequent attention.
What lube should I use after the monsoon?
Clean the chain with a degreaser first, then apply a lube suited to your conditions. Dry lube suits dusty, dry weather; wet lube suits damp conditions.
Can I service my bicycle at home?
Basic cleaning, lubing, tyre checks and bolt checks are easy at home. Leave brake, gear indexing and wheel truing work to a mechanic if you are not confident.
