Billie Jean King to Receive Historic Congressional Gold Medal

Billie Jean King, the legendary tennis icon and trailblazing advocate for gender equality, is poised to receive the prestigious Congressional Gold Medal, becoming the first individual female athlete to be bestowed with this honor.

The bipartisan legislation, introduced by Representatives Mikie Sherrill and Brian Fitzpatrick, unanimously passed the Senate and has now cleared the House of Representatives. President Joe Biden's signature is the final step before King receives the medal, which is the highest civilian award bestowed by the United States Congress.

King's groundbreaking achievements on and off the court have left an indelible mark on society. Her historic victory over Bobby Riggs in the "Battle of the Sexes" in 1973 shattered gender stereotypes and paved the way for women's sports.

Beyond her tennis prowess, King has been an unwavering advocate for social justice, particularly for women's rights. She co-founded the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) and the Women's Sports Foundation, organizations dedicated to promoting gender equality in sports and beyond.
